What does insulating my crawl space actually do?
Crawl space insulation in Wichita Falls slows the heat moving through the shallow open space under your floor, so the rooms above hold their warmth in winter and the floors stop feeling like cold tile.
Most calls I get for this start with cold floors, a damp smell drifting up into the house, or someone who just bought an older home and has never looked under it. The price mostly comes down to how big the crawl space is, whether we insulate under the floor or along the walls, and whether water, leaks or mold need fixing first. Those same repairs, plus a permit check with the city and how easy the space is to crawl around in, are what set the schedule. When I come out, I write up what I found and what I'd do in plain words, so you're looking at your own house and not a guess.
How do you know your crawl space needs insulation?
Floors cold underfoot
If the floors over the crawl space feel cold all winter, the insulation under them is usually missing, has fallen down, or has gaps around the edges. The longer it goes, the more your heater runs to warm a floor that keeps losing heat to the space below.
Insulation hanging or on the dirt
Batts sagging from the joists or lying on the ground usually got wet at some point or were never held up properly. Left there, they do almost nothing for the floor and can hold damp right against the wood.
Musty smell or damp wood
A musty smell in the house or damp-looking framing under it usually means water is getting into the crawl space from somewhere. That needs fixing before anything else, because the problem tends to grow while it waits and new insulation won't stop it.
How we handle crawl space insulation
Here's the order I work in. The first question is whether your crawl space stays vented or gets closed up, because that decides whether we insulate under the floor or along the walls. Any standing water, plumbing leaks, poor drainage or mold get sorted out first as their own repair, since insulation just sits on top of those problems and leaves them in place, and getting them fixed is what lets the insulation do its job. I also look early at the wraps on old ducts and pipes, because in older crawl spaces they might contain asbestos, and if they do, a certified asbestos abatement firm has to be hired to inspect them and choose how they're handled. Only then does the insulation go in.
The rim joists, the boards running around the edge of the floor frame, are usually insulated and sealed with rigid foam or spray foam so the air barrier runs unbroken, and when the leaks go further than the crawl space, that's where our air sealing services come in. If the rooms are losing heat through the walls too, wall insulation is its own job, and I'm happy to look at it on the same visit.
Under the floor, vents left open
This suits a crawl space that stays vented, and when no ductwork runs down there it's usually the simpler job and the one I'd lean toward. Batts, the blanket kind of insulation, should fit snug between the floor joists against the subfloor with no gaps or squashed spots, so it's fair to ask any installer, us included, how they'll stay up there.
Along the walls, space closed up
This suits homes with ductwork under the floor or owners who want a sealed, dry crawl space, and it usually costs more because the whole space has to be planned, not just the vents. One insulation guide says exposed foam on those walls needs a fire covering, and that code generally calls for a stronger one when the space is used for storage.

(940) 298-1123Crawl space insulation in Wichita Falls and the city's rules
Construction work in Wichita Falls has to follow the city's codes, and the City of Wichita Falls asks for the correct permits to do that work. Whether your crawl space job needs one depends on what the job turns out to be, so we check with the city's permit office before we start, and when it calls for a permit we handle the paperwork and the inspections for you.
We're based in Wichita Falls and work across the area, and a lot of the older homes we crawl under here and on jobs in Burkburnett and Iowa Park have foundation vents and old batts that have fallen or soaked up damp. For homes in termite-prone areas, national guidance has foam board on the walls stop short of the top of the foundation so a pest inspector can still see the wood, which is worth asking about if you're closing the space up.

Frequently asked questions
Should my crawl space be insulated at the floor or the walls?
If your crawl space stays vented, it usually gets insulated under the floor, and if it's properly closed up, it generally gets insulated along the foundation walls. So the real decision is whether you keep the vents open, and that's the first thing we talk through when I'm looking at your house.
Can I just seal my crawl space vents to stop cold floors?
Sealing the vents by themselves isn't a good plan, because it can raise the moisture down there, and if a gas furnace or water heater in that space pulls its air from it, closing it off can create a deadly situation. A crawl space always needs a way to dry out, and one way a federal guide calls effective is feeding a small amount of conditioned air from your heating and cooling system into it. If you want it closed and dry, the whole space needs a plan, not just the vent openings.
How much does crawl space insulation cost in Wichita Falls?
Insulating a crawl space usually costs about $3 to $6 per square foot across the US, and that's a national figure for the insulation, not our price. Where yours lands depends on the size, whether it goes under the floor or along the walls, and what has to be fixed first, since water repairs and mold cleanup are separate work. I'll look it over in person and write up what I found and what I'd do.
Do I need a permit for crawl space insulation in Wichita Falls?
Some jobs may need one, so we check with the city before we start rather than guess. If yours does, we take care of the paperwork and the inspections, as I mentioned above.
What should I do if there's mold in my crawl space before insulating?
Get it inspected and cleaned up before any insulation goes in, because insulation laid over mold just leaves it there. A federal energy guide says any surface mold or fungal growth calls for an inspection by a certified mold remediation expert, who sets the cleaning plan before work goes ahead. Once that's done and the damp is fixed at its source, we can insulate.
How long does crawl space insulation take, and do we have to leave the house?
How long it takes mostly depends on how much needs fixing before the insulation goes in, and I'll give you a plain idea of the schedule when I write up your job. For work under the floor, most folks go about their day upstairs, and if foam is part of the plan, I'll tell you before we start whether you'll need to be out and when it's fine to come back in.
