Attic insulation in Wichita Falls TX - even coverage over a sealed attic floor

Hot upstairs rooms and a power bill that keeps climbing usually start in the attic. We seal it first, then blow insulation in evenly.

Does your attic need more insulation?

Attic insulation in Wichita Falls usually means blowing loose fill, cellulose or fiberglass, across the attic floor so your ceiling holds back more heat, and it's the best time to seal the gaps up there too.

Most folks call me because a room won't stay comfortable, or because they just bought an older house and have no idea what's up there. The price turns on how big the attic is, how many inches are already in place, whether old wet or dirty material has to come out and how many gaps need sealing, and the schedule mostly turns on whether a repair has to happen before we insulate. When I come out, I write up what I found and what I'd do in plain words, so you know what your attic needs before you decide anything.

How can you tell your attic insulation isn't doing its job?

Upstairs stays hot

If the rooms upstairs or the room over the garage are still hot after the AC has run all afternoon, heat is usually coming straight through a thin or leaky ceiling. Every month it waits, the system runs longer and the power bill shows it.

You can see the joists

When you peek through the hatch and the tops of the ceiling joists are poking out, the old insulation has settled or was never deep enough, and it's often thinnest at the edges. Those thin spots keep letting heat in until somebody evens them out.

Stains or damp insulation

A brown ring on the ceiling, or insulation that's dark and clumped, usually points to a roof leak or a bath fan blowing into the attic. Cover that with fresh insulation and you've hidden the problem while the framing keeps getting wet.

How we do attic insulation

Before we blow anything in, I go up and check for roof leaks, old wiring and bath fans that dump into the attic, because new insulation laid over any of those just hides them. Then our crew does the air sealing, closing the gaps in the attic floor around pipes, wires, lights and the hatch, so the insulation isn't fighting a draft. Last, we blow the new insulation down evenly across the whole ceiling, all the way out to the edges, with baffles, short guards that hold insulation back from the vents, so the eave vents stay clear and the attic keeps breathing.

If the old material is soaked or full of droppings, it comes out before anything new goes in. Most attics get blown-in insulation, loose fill blown through a hose, because it settles in around wires and framing, and when the drafts are coming from the walls and floors too, we look at home insulation for the rest of the house.

  • Sealing and topping up loose fill

This suits most attics where the old insulation is dry and clean, because we seal the floor and add loose fill right over it. It costs less than foam, and in a vented attic it usually does the job well.

  • Spray foam at the roofline

Foam costs more, but it seals air while it insulates, which matters when your ductwork runs through the attic. If the ducts live up there, I'll usually point you toward foam instead.

What changes attic insulation work in Wichita Falls

The City of Wichita Falls says construction work in the city needs the correct permits and licenses, and its codes set the level new work goes by, since general federal guidance says new attic insulation should meet or beat what current codes call for. That rule doesn't spell out whether your attic job needs a permit, so I check with the city before we start, and when a job calls for one, we handle the paperwork and the inspections for you.

In older houses we sometimes find vermiculite, a gray-brown pebbly fill, and federal guidance says it may contain asbestos and has to be tested before the attic is sealed and insulated, with Texas owners starting at the state health department. We leave it alone until it's tested, and we keep the same eye out on jobs in Burkburnett and Iowa Park.

Once you say go, we check on permits with the city, cover and protect your house, and do the sealing and repairs before any insulation goes in. If the attic is packed with stored things we plan for moving them, and at the end we walk the finished job with you.

Frequently asked questions

How much does attic insulation cost in Wichita Falls, and is blown-in cheaper than batts?

Installing blown-in attic insulation across the US usually costs about $4 to $7.50 per square foot, and blowing it in is usually less expensive than laying batts while covering the attic floor more fully. Your own price depends on the attic's size, what's up there now and what has to be sealed or fixed first, and I'll write that up when I look at your attic.

What has to be fixed before attic insulation goes in?

A leaking roof, knob and tube wiring that's still live, which is the old wiring run on porcelain knobs, and bath fans ducted into the attic all get handled before any insulation. The openings in the attic floor get sealed too, with metal blocking and collars around hot flues and covers over recessed lights that aren't rated to touch insulation and seal air.

Do I need a permit for attic insulation in Wichita Falls?

Possibly, and we find out for your job before we start. As I mentioned above, the city wants the correct permits for construction work, so we check with them and handle the paperwork and inspections when a permit applies.

Can blown insulation go on a sloped ceiling?

Only on gentle slopes, because one maker's guide says most insulation makers recommend loose fill up to a 4/12 pitch, about 4 inches of rise per foot, and steeper areas need batts. If part of your ceiling follows the roofline, I'll point it out when I come look and plan batts there.

How long does attic insulation take, and do we have to leave the house?

For blown-in work you can usually stay home, since it's loose fill going in through the attic, not foam that needs a wait before you come back inside. How long we're up there turns on how much sealing and repair comes first and how much is stored in the attic, and I'll tell you what to expect once I've seen it.

How do I get my attic ready for insulation?

Clear a path to the hatch and move what you can out of the attic, and if there's too much, the work plan can cover moving and storing it for a while. One maker's checklist also calls for the hatch or pull-down stairs to be weatherstripped and insulated along with the rest of the attic, so that's worth asking about.
